Las Vegas family photography

Annie and I first met 2 years ago after she asked me to take her maternity photos. Over the past 2 years I’ve seen her family grow from having zero children to an amazing family of four and have been luckily enough to watch them grow along the way. #throwbackthursday

In celebration of ~~Throwback Thursday~~ #throwbackthursday and Facebook finally getting hashtags, I thought it would be proper to kick it real old school and feature some of my antique cameras. I started taking photos on my dad’s Minolta Maxxum 5000 and 7000 series cameras as well as an old Olympus OM-2 but haven’t shot with film in years. Digital cameras make it just too easy nowadays and with imaging software I can make any digital photo look like it was shot on darn near any type of film ever produced. However, every once in a great while, I feel a little more creative juices flowing and break out an old Polaroid.

Here’s two of my Polaroids and an antique Kodak folder camera.

Vegas Dog Photography

Oliver Mozzarella has a new sister…and boy oh boy is she going to be a beast. Hadley Blue found her forever home after being rescued by Spencer and Alex this spring. Only 3 months old, she has the paws of a bear and I wouldn’t be surprised if this Boxer/Lab mix has some Great Dane in her as well.

Beautiful Mandarin Vegas Wedding

I usually start out wedding blog posts with a story about the couple I am featuring, telling a little bit of their story and sharing some of my favorite moments from the day. This post will be a bit different however. Instead of talking about my favorite moments, I’m just going to show them to you as well as a few of my favorite photos from the day.

This wedding took place at the Mandarin Oriental resort in Las Vegas in their foyer and the reception was held in the Oriental Ballroom.

Pet Photographer

Anytime I get a new piece of equipment I have to put it through its paces, making sure it functions properly and to get a feel for how I’m going to use it. I think my dogs have the ability to know when exactly I buy something, as they immediately run and hide. When they finally come back around me they do whatever they can to not let me take their photo. This week was no exception.

After picking up a new wide-angle lens, I brought one of my cameras out and both Kelvin and Lola had this look on their face as to say, “OH NO. Not again.” I sat Kelvin down first and for about 10 minutes he refused to acknowledge me, never looking directly at me. I took a photo and being frustrated I moved on to Lola. She looked at me, square in the eyes and as I raised the camera to my eye she made faces at me then proceded to laugh.

You don’t have to believe me. The proof is in the photos.

Recreating Old Photos

My best friend Sarah ~~txt~~ text me the other day with a photo idea she had and after hearing it I was pretty pumped to try to make it happen for her. Since she was a child, she has had her favorite photo of her and her dad framed and hanging on her bedroom wall. It was a photo taken at a childhood birthday party and in her eyes captured one of her favorite childhood memories. Her idea was to recreate the photo as closely as possible and asked me to help her do it. As soon as I saw the original photo I knew why she loved it. It was a simple moment, randomly captured on a disposable camera and reminded me of a photo that was taken of me and my dad on my first fishing trip. Sarah went on to tell me that when she she said as closely as possible….she meant it, wanting to wear an identical outfit while recreating the scene. We made a trip to the local Goodwill and found 2 tops that came pretty darn close to what she was wearing that day, and even got some iron-on flowers that she added to the outfit for that extra bit of authenticity.

OK. So we got the outfit…now the hard part. How do I recreate the scene? I showed up at Sarah’s house as she was making dinner for her parents, camera in hand and told her dad I was working on some sort of photo essay involving families and asked that I take a photo of the two of them. Sarah chimed in “Dad! You have to wear that blue polo shirt of yours!” and without suspecting a thing he ran to the closet and threw on a shirt similar to what he was wearing 20-something years ago. In the meantime, Sarah prepared a plate of food and I grabbed a can of Coke from the fridge. As he came down the stairs I said “Right here is fine,” and pointed to the staircase where the original picture was taken. I set the soda can down on the stairs while he and Sarah had a seat. She gave him the plate of food and I told her to give her a kiss on the cheek.

In the words of Emeril Lagasse, “BAM!” I got the shot I needed. I’m sure in his mind he was thinking “What in the world is going on?” as he had NO idea what we were up to.
